Artist Statement

I like to photograph nature as well as people. I love to capture images of animals and landscapes, but I also take portraits of people. It makes me happy to see the smiles that light up on a person’s face when I show a picture I took of them. One thing I like about portraits is that so much can be communicated from a simple expression. I like to document moments of people and animals because I think life is very important. If something is seen once, it may never be seen again. An example of this is the clouds, always changing, never the same shape twice. It’s important to cherish what you have now because it can be gone in a blink of an eye.

My work fits in the contemporary world because I like to use unusual angles and a lot of colors. When photographing people I like to get down on the ground and point the camera upwards to capture their whole profile. With nature, I tend to take pictures of anything I find pretty and full of life such as plants and animals. I sometimes refer to my work as being modern and abstract. I like to get multiple reactions from my audience because I don’t think anyone should look at something in a single way. My vision is to show reality and the beauty within the plain and ordinary, and that all living things are special.

I have been involved with art since I was very young. My mother was a photographer, a writer, and a painter. She died in 2009. She taught me to express myself and to always stay positive. I tend to think of her as being my inspiration and influence.
